Bad things happen to good people…why?

We can look around our world, our environment, our neighbourhood in which we live, even our churches and see bad things happening to good people.  You could even be one of those people who are wondering why me?  I live right, do right and yet bad things happen.  However, with everything that’s going wrong or bad around us, we must remember that God is good.  Scripture confirms to us that God is not just good sometimes, but ALL the time, so how could a Good God do Bad things?  God is Love.  If Love is always good, then God is always good too.  Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him”.

Scripture lets us know that every good thing that happens to us or in our life, comes from God.  James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect thing is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows“. So when you have a good day at School/Work, then that came from God.

The problem is that, even though God is good, not everything in our world is good.  And because there is such a cloud of mystery surrounding God, it is very easy for people to begin to think that though God is good, sometimes He is also bad.  When bad things happen many people say that God in His goodness and love made it happen.  When a child dies, people trying to cope with the grief that comes with their loss may say things like “God loved the little angel so much He wanted to take it up to heaven to be with Him”.  Let me ask you a question, is giving a child to a parent and then taking him away from that parent so you can have him good?  If you knew someone who stole people from people, if you knew someone who killed people, would you, by definition, call that person good?

No.

The Devil Is Bad
When bad thing happen to good people, you have to remember that it’s the devil who is bad.  The Bible says in John 10:10, “The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. This lets us know that there are 2 main forces at work today in our world.  1st of all, there is the force of good, which is God, and 2nd there is the force of evil, which is the devil (the wicked one).

Every day these forces are engaged in a battle of epic proportions.  God is trying to bring us good and the devil is trying to bring us harm.  The devil who absolutely hates God knows that he cannot defeat Him because God shut the devil down when Jesus died on the cross, the devil comes on wherever he can to bring harm, injustice, and disease to God’s most prized possession – and that is humanity.

So when you look around the world and see horrible things happening, understand that those things are not coming from God.

So, what do you do when bad things happen to you?

  1. Hold onto what you believe
When things go bad, realise your Father is right there.  God is reaching out for you.  Look for Him.  It may be a scripture, a message from your Pastor, good advice from a friend, or with the memory of something you heard yrs ago.  What you believe may be the thing that pulls you to safety.
  2. Never jump Ship
Refuse to be bitter over a mystery of why something has happened.  Don’t quit or give up on God.  There will be times in our life when things will happen to you or a friend and no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to explain why.  Those mysteries could cause you to lose hope or faith in God.  Don’t do it, don’t give up, don’t bail out on your faith.  stay with the ship and let God see you through the storm.
  3. Trust God for supernatural provision
Trust Him to provide everything you need.  God is a big God, He has done so many amazing things for His people, remember when he parted the Red Sea (Ex.14), He made the sun stand still so His people could win the battle (Joshua 10), He turned water into wine (John 2), He fed 5000 people with just pieces of fish and bread (Matthew 14), and that’s just naming a few!!

If and when you go through a tough time, realise you don’t have to go through it alone.  Call on God.  Take some time to get alone and tell God what is going on, and ask Him to intervene in your situation.  He has been there for countless other people, and He will be there for you.  Take off the limits, don’t put God in a box, He is too big and amazing for us to even try to work out.  He’s bigger than the devil, bigger than our problems, bigger than any war and famine!  Go to Him with all your burdens, He can handle them and in return give you a peace you never knew!!!

Bless the Lord!

If you need a prayer to accept Jesus, here is one !

Prayer of Salvation
Heavenly Father,

I come to You admitting that I am a sinner.  Right now, I choose to turn away from sin, and ask You to cleanse me of all unrighteousness.

I believe that Your son, Jesus, dies on the cross to take away my sins.  I also believe that He rose again from the dead so that I might be forgiven of my sins and made righteous through faith in Him.

I call upon the name of Jesus Christ to be the Saviour and Lord of my life.  Jesus, I choose to follow You and ask that You fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit.  I declare that right now I am a child of God.  I am free from sin and full of the righteousness of God.

I am saved in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

  1. Did you actually read through this post? Then your question would have been answered. I don’t believe it is about God’s sense of humour, it’s about the fact that the devil is real and wants to harm. God is not about wanting to harm us, He loves us. It’s not about man made religion, it’s about relationship and faith. I have had my fair share of bad things happen to me, a lot of things which could/should have killed me. But I refuse to give up on God as without Him I know it would have been worse. Bitterness and resentment are a choice we can let go of, and taste peace and release.

  2. Do you really believe that in this unhospitable Universe there is a personal god who knows you and and watches over you while you struggle to make sense of his cruel , and revengful character, and (eye for an eye until we all get blind) I must repeat, his vicious sense of humour.

    • I believe there is one creator who is God, who sent His son Jesus Christ to save the world. I believe God is love. I believe that the devil exists and is evil and is trying to take as many people as possible to hell with him. The character of the devil is bitter, hateful, jealous, evil and all things of this nature. The character of God is forgiving, loving, gracious, merciful and beyond anything else any of us, the created, could even imagine. I don’t even think you are reading my responses, just simply venting your anger, or maybe hurt. If you really have no belief in such an amazing God, then why reply or engage with this blog? I pray that you seek and find the truth and are set free from all bondages that are keeping you in bitterness.
